OUR VISION is for a future in which safe, dignified, and affordable housing is accessible to every community we serve—where housing serves as a foundation for residents to succeed in education, employment, and life. Each home we provide represents a step toward creating that future.

OUR STORY

LNWA was established in 1949 based on the conviction that your place of residence enhances the opportunities available to you.

In the early 1950s, founder Leon N. Weiner established Dunleith, one of the pioneering racially integrated suburban communities in the Mid-Atlantic region. During an era when segregation was prevalent, Mr. Weiner took an alternative approach by designing and developing communities that welcomed individuals from diverse income levels and backgrounds.

Over the decades, he:

  • Helped shape national housing policy as President of the National Association of Home Builders
  • Served on President Lyndon Johnson’s Kaiser Committee on Urban Housing, which influenced the Housing Act of 1968
  • Served as President of the National Housing Conference and on key housing and finance boards
  • Consistently advocated for fair housing and ethical development

Today, we carry his values forward in every community we build and manage. Each time we hand over a set of keys, we’re reminded: Each Key Opens A Future.

Leon N. Weiner (1920–2002) was more than a builder. He was a social entrepreneur who used housing as a tool for fairness, stability, and opportunity.

Highlights of his career include:

  • Developing Dunleith, a pioneering racially integrated subdivision in Delaware
  • Helping shape federal housing policy as a member of the Kaiser Committee on Urban Housing
  • Serving as President of the National Association of Home Builders and the National Housing Conference
  • Serving on the White House Conference on Aging and the White House Conference on Small Business
  • Chairing the NAHB Research Center, where he helped launch a prototype “smart house” in 1991—decades ahead of modern smart home systems

Leon devoted much of his career to delivering nearly 10,000 affordable apartments and thousands of homes throughout the Mid-Atlantic and beyond. Twice named “Fair Housing Person of the Year,” he was remembered as “the conscience of the housing industry.”

His legacy lives on in LNWA’s work and in every community we touch.
